The Invisible Woman (2024-2026)

This series explores the giant pedestal women are placed on, built upon invisible ideals of the perfect woman. Each image considers what happens when a woman tries to live up to these grandiose expectations: they are rendered invisible through failure to meet them or inevitably turn invisible as the standards are constantly changing. Attempting to remain on this pedestal transforms the woman into something unrecognisable, displaced from her own body by distorting herself and stretching herself to breaking point.

‘The Invisible Woman’ follows the tightrope women must walk between objectification and invisibility. Turning invisible, however, allows for fleeting moments of joy, blissful solitude, and curiosity to explore new places unseen and without judgement. Escaping the idealisation, the pressure of simultaneously being enlarged and made small, confined to certain shapes and sizes, can be liberating. The chance to become the voyeur, freed momentarily from the weight of others’ gazes, is gladly seized. However, taking up space that no one notices is, ultimately, demoralising. At the heart of this project lies the irony of being so hyperbolically invisible: becoming monstrous, growing to bodily encompass the size and weight of female expectations, is not enough to garner the world’s attention.
